Why I’m So Avid About Electric Fireplaces

If you’ve spoken to me lately, you’ve probably heard me chirping on about electric fireplaces. They’ve come an awful long way in the past few years. No more of that tacky looking style, poorly built components and the like. They actually look quite impressive – and when you get into the higher end models they even become some pretty impressive machines! Let’s break down a few of the reasons that I think electric fireplaces are going to be adopted into today’s modern lifestyle.

  1. You can install them practically anywhere!

Remember the days when it was considered a necessity to have a fireplace? Probably not, because that was before my time. Maybe in my father Mister Douglas’ time, but unfortunately I never thought to ask him so I can’t say for sure. At some point they served their function, there was a reason people installed them. As time went on however, homes became fully equipped with heating systems and they became more of a “nice-to-have” instead of a “need-to-have”, and as such, many homes and nearly all apartments were built without them. But what if you want an electric fireplace, but you can’t even consider installing a chimney for any number of reasons? Electric fireplace to the rescue! You can get either a freestanding or a wall-mounted model and install it in any home completely irreversibly.

  2. Electric is safer!

Old-school fireplaces are used to contain – believe it or not – fire! Guess what? Fire gets hot. Like, really hot. Like burn-your-house-down-if-you’re-being-an-idiot hot. Fires can start from lack of proper containment, lack of attentiveness, and even lack of proper cleaning (see number 8!). You really shouldn’t be using a traditional hearth in your home if you don’t know what you’re doing. Once again, electric fireplace to the rescue! You can even stuff an electric fireplace insert right in your existing hearth. As long as you remember to turn it off when you’re not using it, you’ll probably be in the clear. You can even disconnect the power if you won’t be using it for a while.

  3. no more stacking wood!

This one is kind of self explanatory – but since you won’t be burning wood, you won’t be needing wood! Not only does this save you the expense and the hassle of buying wood, it also saves you from needing to have place to store wood that keeps it nice and dry through the foul weather.Heaven forbid you have to actually stack the wood yourself, splinters will become your new best friend and your lower back will become your enemy. Also, did I mention that rodents love hiding in wood piles?

  4. They look cool – duh!

OK, OK. As I admitted from the get-go, these things have a reputation of being downright ugly. That’s because at one time they were – totally hokey. A throwback to the times when electric was the new buzzword and they were making everything electric. It’s pretty clear though that the technology has come a long way, because the electric fireplaces that are available these days have a ton of cool feathers, they are fully adjustable, and they even look sleek when they aren’t being used.
